| Personally Handling Your Project will Cost You Money |

Most people believe that managing their own home construction projects would save them money. "Managing" means that you will be in charge of procuring materials, monitoring progress, allocating budget, supervising workers, and paying their wages. On the surface, it seems that you may save money, but in the long run, there is a big chance you are actually losing money than if you hired a contractor to do it for you. Here are some reasons why:


Unless you are a professional architect or engineer, you have no business handling a construction project. It's like doing surgery if you're not a surgeon or representing yourself in court without any knowledge about the law. Do you understand the specifications of the materials you are buying? Do you have a firm grasp of the proper methods of construction? How can you protect yourself from fraudulent individuals if you do not have any expertise in the field? Are your workers adhering to the industry standards and sticking to the timetables you have established? How would you know? Often, you don't. You are leaving yourself vulnerable to errors and scams. Wrong materials? Substandard work? Delayed progress? Structural issues? Even if you somehow succeed in the construction with no delays, how can you be so sure that what you built will stand the test of time? In a little more than a year, you will most likely have to spend more money on repairs. Money goes down the drain for you.


Unless you are retired, a business owner, or an investor, chances are you are an employee. If so, are you on leave while working on your project? Time off work is money not earned. Wouldn't it be better if you simply hired a contractor and continue going to the office? If you are a business owner or an investor, you probably know how to manage risk and understand that hiring someone to do it for you is the best option. Rather than wasting your time on a task, you are not qualified to do, focus on things that matter more. You are losing money, use your time wisely.


In filing for your building permit, it requires the presence of an architect or engineer to handle the construction. Bypassing the process of the building permit and all its requirements are illegal. Furthermore, if you directly pay your workers, you are now considered as an employer. Since you do not have the necessary licenses to be such, you are doing an illegal activity. You may argue that in our country it's easy to circumvent the law. Still, you are carrying a legal burden, an unnecessary risk that may cost you a lot.


The beauty of modern society is that people learned how to specialize. You choose to enter a certain field for your job, while other people handle the remaining aspects of life. You need transportation? You don't need to know how to build a car, you just buy one, made by other specialists. You need a computer? You don't need to know how to build one, you just buy one, made by other specialists. You need to build a new house? Why would you do it yourself if you are not in the industry? You don't need to know how to build one, you hire a contractor, the specialist. Remember that your home protects you and your family. You would want the best for your family, right?
